Basel 2010 Preview : Bulgari Diagono Calibro 303

An assertive and sporty style, generous and balanced proportions, elevated technical content. The Bulgari Diagono Calibre 303 chronograph watch exemplifies the contemporary way of life and stands as an emblem of aesthetic enquiry at the service of the highest technical and functional standards.

The model’s name derives from the ancient Greek word agòn, which means “athletic contest”, a subtle reference to Myron’s Discobolus, from which the model draws inspiration for its simple, dynamic and contemporary form and style, rooted in the enduring modernity of ancient Greece.

First created more than 20 years ago, the Diagono collection has since proven to have transcended the shifting tides of taste, and can now be confidently defined as timeless. Despite its perpetual evolution, Diagono has never betrayed its original values and continues to exhibit a sophisticated architecture with great added value, in both form and substance.

Diagono Calibre 303 is powered by the caliber BVL 303, an in-house manufactured self-winding mechanical movement assembled and finished entirely by hand. The development of this movement, composed of 303 separate parts, required a total of 3,520 hours of work. Its integrated construction with column wheel and pinion with vertical clutch is the nec plus ultra for the true connoisseur. This sophisticated system prevents the chronograph second hand from skipping when it starts, stops or is reset, and consequently provides an extremely precise distribution of the chronographic functions, the buttons of which arechanneled for optimal grip. The mechanism enables the easy measurement of brief periods of time thanks to the three graduated 12-hour, 30-minute and 60-second counters. The display also includes a date window at 6 o’clock.

The intricate movement is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, as are the elegant Côtes de Genève, perlage and satiné soleil finishes. It is protected by a case made of 75 components in brushed steel with chamfered edges, fitted with a polished 18-kt white gold bezel engraved with the Bulgari logo. The robust external ring, with a unique design feature that protects the crown, houses the pins for an elegant blue alligator strap. The dial is distinguished by hand-applied faceted indexes that underscore the mass and density typical of Bulgari’s sense of form. The complex multi-level construction ensures perfect legibility despite the sophistication of the decoration: predominantly blue in the upper part, it elegantly alternates a satiné soleil finish and vertical lines in the lower part.

A thoroughly contemporary timepiece, the Diagono Calibro 303 is the quintessence of Swiss watchmaking expertise and Bulgari’s unending quest for perfectly proportioned form.
